Nursing and Medical Government Jobs — Where the Posts Are

Health-sector government recruitment runs on its own cycle and its own vocabulary, largely separate from the SSC and railway world most candidates know.

Three tiers matter: nursing officer recruitment through AIIMS and ESIC, state health department drives, and UPSC Combined Medical Services for doctors.

UPSC Combined Medical Services 2027

The UPSC calendar for 2027 sets CMS notification for 3 March 2027, applications closing 23 March 2027, and the exam on 18 July 2027.

CMS is the route for MBBS holders into central health services, railways and municipal services. Unlike most medical recruitment it follows the UPSC pattern: a written examination followed by a personality test.

NORCET is the main nursing route

AIIMS conducts NORCET as a common eligibility test for nursing officer posts across AIIMS institutions and several other central hospitals. It runs in stages, and clearing the written test leads to further rounds rather than direct appointment.

What makes it competitive is scope: it covers the full nursing curriculum rather than a narrow syllabus, so preparation is closer to revising your degree than to learning exam-specific material. Candidates who did well academically usually have an advantage that general-aptitude preparation cannot replicate.

Registration matters as much as marks. Nursing recruitment almost always requires valid registration with a State Nursing Council, and it must be current at the document verification stage. Candidates with lapsed registration are rejected regardless of score, and renewal takes time. Check yours before a notification opens, not after.

Residential school posts are often overlooked

The Eklavya Model Residential Schools recruitment run by NESTS includes Female Staff Nurse posts alongside its teaching vacancies, within a total of 7,267 positions. These sit outside the usual hospital recruitment channels and attract fewer applicants as a result. The EMRS result page covers where that cycle stands.

The same pattern holds across government: nursing posts attached to schools, defence establishments, railways and public sector undertakings are advertised separately from hospital recruitment and draw smaller fields.

What to track

  1. AIIMS and ESIC notification pages directly, since these do not always surface promptly on aggregator sites.
  2. Your state health department and subordinate services commission. State staff nurse drives are frequently larger than central ones.
  3. Railway and defence medical establishments, which recruit nursing and paramedical staff on their own cycles.
  4. The UPSC annual calendar if you hold MBBS — CMS dates are published a year ahead.

Before you apply

Keep your degree or diploma certificate, State Nursing Council registration, and experience certificates scanned and current. Health-sector verification is stricter than most government recruitment about document validity dates, and the general checklist applies on top of that.
