10th Pass Government Jobs — What You Can Actually Apply For

A Class 10 certificate opens more central recruitment than most candidates assume, and some of the largest drives in the country sit at this level. Railway Group D alone carried 22,195 posts in its current cycle.

The trade-off is that most of these routes involve a physical test, a medical standard, or both — checked late, after you have already invested months.

India Post GDS is the unusual one

Gramin Dak Sevak recruitment selects on Class 10 marks alone. No written exam, no interview. A merit list is prepared from the marks on your matriculation certificate.

That makes it the single most accessible central recruitment in the country, and it means your eligibility was decided years ago by your board results. If your Class 10 percentage was strong, apply every cycle. If it was not, your effort is better spent on exam-based routes where you can still change the outcome.

Railway Group D at scale

The current cycle under CEN 09/2025 covers 22,195 Level-1 posts — Pointsman, Track Maintainer, Assistant Loco Shed, Assistant Operations and Assistant TL and AC — at an entry basic pay of ₹18,000. It drew 52,39,760 applications, roughly 236 per vacancy.

The CBT result is expected in late October. See the Group D result page for where that recruitment stands now.

Check the physical and medical standards before you apply, not after. Height, chest, endurance and vision requirements are verified at the end of the process. A candidate who clears the written paper and fails on a standard they could have read in the notification has lost a full cycle. Railway medical categories in particular vary by post and catch people out.

Pay at this level

Pay levelEntry basic payTypical posts
Level 1₹18,000Railway Group D, MTS
Level 2₹19,900Some constable and clerical roles
Level 3₹21,700GD Constable and equivalent

These are basic pay figures. Take-home adds dearness allowance, currently 60 per cent, plus house rent and transport allowance, less deductions. A Level 1 post in a metro pays noticeably more than the same post in a small town purely because of HRA.

Should you wait and finish 12th?

Where you can, yes — 12th pass opens considerably more, including SSC CHSL and the RRB NTPC undergraduate stream, generally at higher pay levels with no physical test.

But the two are not mutually exclusive. Nothing stops you applying at 10th pass level while studying, and many candidates join at Level 1 and continue upward through departmental examinations. Age is the real constraint: most of these recruitments cap in the mid to late twenties, so open windows are worth taking.

Practical advice

  1. Keep your Class 10 marksheet and certificate scanned and to hand. For GDS it is the entire application.
  2. Measure yourself against the physical standards before paying any fee.
  3. Get your category certificate into the correct central format now. It is the most common rejection cause at every level — see the checklist.
  4. Track state police boards alongside central ones. State constable drives are often larger than anything central in a given year.
