Applications closed 6 October 2026
UPSC Engineering Services 2027 — Closing 6 October, Prelims in January
The Union Public Service Commission notified Engineering Services (Preliminary) Examination 2027 on 16 September 2026 for 480 posts. Applications close on 6 October 2026 and the Prelims is on 31 January 2027.
ESE is the highest engineering route in Indian government service, leading to Group A technical posts. It is also the one engineering graduates most often overlook while preparing for exams with far worse odds.
Schedule, from the UPSC calendar
| Notification released | 16 September 2026 |
|---|---|

These dates come from the UPSC Annual Calendar 2027, published on 20 May 2026. UPSC attaches a standard caveat that dates are liable to alteration if circumstances warrant, so confirm on upsc.gov.in.
Why ESE is worth the attempt
The comparison that matters: SSC CGL drew roughly 28.5 lakh applications for 10,731 posts, and railway Group D drew 52 lakh for 22,195. ESE is restricted to engineering graduates in four core disciplines, which cuts the field dramatically before the exam even starts.
The trade-off is depth. ESE tests your core branch seriously, at a level closer to your degree than to general aptitude. Candidates who were strong academically in Civil, Mechanical, Electrical or Electronics have an advantage here that no amount of general-studies preparation replicates elsewhere.
Nine days is enough to apply, not to decide. If you hold an engineering degree and have been preparing for general government exams, this window closes on 6 October and the next one is a year away. The application costs little. Sitting the Prelims in January costs a day.
Structure
Three stages: a Preliminary objective examination, a Main examination in your branch, and a personality test. Prelims covers general studies and engineering aptitude alongside your discipline; Mains is entirely branch-specific and descriptive.
The gap between Prelims on 31 January and Mains on 18 June is about four and a half months. Candidates who begin Mains preparation only after clearing Prelims are already behind, because the descriptive papers demand written practice rather than recognition.
Other engineering routes
If ESE is not the right fit, the engineering jobs guide covers RRB and SSC Junior Engineer, which sit at Pay Level 6 with a much smaller candidate pool, and PSU recruitment through GATE.
