Extended windows closed 5 October 2026

Bank Specialist Officer and Apprentice Openings, October 2026

Two specialist officer windows, extended once, closed on 5 October 2026. Apprentice intakes continue to run on their own schedules. Specialist recruitment works differently from the IBPS common process and rewards a different candidate entirely.

Specialist officer is not the PO exam

This is the distinction that matters. Probationary Officer recruitment tests general aptitude and takes any graduate. Specialist Officer recruitment requires a specific qualification and usually work experience — IT, law, chartered accountancy, risk, marketing, wealth management, agriculture.

The consequence is a much smaller field. A candidate with a relevant professional qualification competes against hundreds rather than lakhs, and several specialist roles are filled through interview and shortlisting rather than a large written examination.

Extensions are not rare in banking, and they are not a reason to wait. Both windows above were extended once. An extension usually signals under-subscription, which is good news for applicants — but the next deadline is usually final, and a second extension cannot be assumed.

Apprentice intakes are the other route

Bank apprentice programmes run at scale — PNB's recent intake was reported at over 5,000 positions — and take graduates with no banking experience. They are fixed-term training engagements rather than permanent posts, paid a stipend, and selection is usually a short online test plus a local language check.

They are worth applying to for two reasons: the experience counts when you later apply for permanent posts, and the field is smaller than a PO drive because many candidates dismiss non-permanent roles.

The local language rule applies here too

As with regional rural banks, apprentice and several specialist posts require proficiency in the local language of the state you apply to, verified at document verification. Applying to a state where you cannot evidence the language wastes the fee and the cycle. See the bank exams guide for how this works across banking recruitment.

Fees are higher in banking

Banking application fees run well above SSC levels and are charged per application. Budget for that if you are applying to several posts across banks.

Where to check

Specialist and apprentice recruitment is advertised on each bank's own careers page rather than through IBPS. SBI in particular runs entirely separately. Check the individual bank sites rather than waiting for an aggregator to list them.
