Typing Speed Test — Measured Against What These Posts Actually Require

The typing test is qualifying, which leads candidates to treat it as a formality. It adds nothing to your merit score and it removes you completely if you fail it.

People clear both tiers of SSC CHSL and lose the post here. One minute below tells you where you stand.

What the standards actually are

PostRequirementRoughly
LDC and JSA — SSC CHSL35 wpm English, or 30 wpm Hindi10,500 / 9,000 key depressions per hour
Data Entry Operator — SSC CHSL8,000 key depressions per hourAbout 27 wpm sustained

These are the figures commonly prescribed. They change between cycles and between departments, so read the skill test paragraph in your own notification rather than relying on this table.

A key depression is not a word. Departments measure DEO posts in key depressions per hour, counting every character including spaces and punctuation. Word-per-minute figures are conventionally derived at five characters per word, which is why 8,000 key depressions an hour works out at roughly 27 wpm rather than something higher. If your target is quoted in key depressions, use that column.

Accuracy is the part that fails people

Most skill tests allow a small percentage of errors and deduct or disqualify beyond it. A candidate typing 45 wpm at 88 per cent accuracy is in worse shape than one typing 34 wpm at 98 per cent, because the errors compound across a full passage.

Practise for accuracy first and let speed follow. The reverse rarely works, because fast inaccurate typing becomes a habit that is hard to unlearn under exam conditions.

How to practise properly

  1. Type the official medium. If the post allows Hindi and you intend to use it, practise in Hindi with the prescribed font and layout, not in English.
  2. Use a keyboard like the centre's. Exam centres use ordinary desktop keyboards. Practising exclusively on a laptop changes your finger travel.
  3. Practise for the full test duration, usually ten to fifteen minutes. One-minute bursts do not reveal where your accuracy collapses.
  4. Do not look at the keyboard. If you currently do, fix that before chasing speed — it caps you permanently.
  5. Start when you apply, not after the mains result. Candidates who start late are the ones who fail this stage.

Questions

Does the typing test count towards my merit?

No. It is qualifying only. It adds nothing to your score and disqualifies you if you fail.

What is a key depression?

Every character typed, including spaces and punctuation. Word-per-minute figures are derived at five characters per word.

Can I take the test in Hindi?

Most SSC posts allow English or Hindi, chosen at application. The required speed differs — commonly 35 wpm English against 30 wpm Hindi.

How many attempts do I get?

One, within the recruitment cycle. There is no re-test for a failed skill test.
